Tramp oil originates from leaking CNC machines and mixes with coolant, becoming a contaminant. There are three types of tramp oil: (1) Free tramp oil, which floats on the surface of the coolant; (2) Dispersed tramp oil, which is dispersed within the coolant; and (3) Emulsified tramp oil, which is emulsified in the coolant and cannot be separated by normal gravity.
Tramp oil has significant and widespread negative impacts. Its presence can promote bacterial growth, leading to foul odors and rust issues for CNC machines, equipment, and workpieces. Tramp oil shortens the lifespan of coolant, degrades its quality, and makes concentration measurements inaccurate. Consequently, the presence of tramp oil results in higher coolant consumption (increasing operational costs) and a higher number of defective products.
For these reasons, tramp oil must be removed or separated from the coolant/cutting fluid to prevent adverse effects.
Solutions
There are two types of tools used to address tramp oil issues:
- Oil skimmer
- Tramp oil terminator (TOT)
Oil skimmer
The TOT is superior to the oil skimmer as it can clean all types of tramp oil (free tramp oil, dispersed tramp oil, and emulsified tramp oil).
In contrast, the oil skimmer is only effective for cleaning free tramp oil and is not effective for dispersed and emulsified tramp oil.
The oil skimmer cleans free tramp oil by capturing it with a moving belt that acts like a sweep, whereas the TOT operates on the principle of centrifugation.
5 Key Benefits of the Tramp Oil Terminator
- Reduces daily coolant consumption (reducing cost)
- Extends coolant lifespan
- Eliminates field issues such as rust, odor, dirty machines, sticky coolant, excessive coolant consumption, and rapid tool wear
- Reduces overall waste
- Decreases manpower usage and downtime due to draining processes
Tramp oil terminator (TOT)
Conclusion: The tramp oil terminator is more effective as it can handle all types of tramp oil and can save on coolant costs.
