In the process of converting palm oil into crude palm oil (CPO), several stages require electrical energy consumption. The larger the production capacity and the more processes involved, the higher the electrical energy consumption needed.
To meet energy needs, palm oil mills can utilize waste in the form of palm fiber and shell as boiler fuel to generate steam that drives the steam turbine for electricity generation.
Steam Turbine
In addition to the steam turbine, palm oil mills also need a generator set (genset) as an energy source that runs on diesel fuel. The genset and steam turbine can operate alternately or simultaneously. A 200 kW genset is operated to meet domestic and lighting needs when the mill is not yet active and the steam turbine cannot work. Two 400 kW gensets are operated to start the mill’s operations until enough fiber and shell are produced for boiler fuel.
Gensets in the palm oil industry generally use diesel engines as backup power suppliers that operate when the boiler is shut down or its pressure drops, to ensure continuous electricity supply so that the palm oil mill can keep operating. Although gensets do not operate 24 hours a day, they play a very crucial role, and their condition needs to be maintained in prime condition.
Generator Set (Genset)
PROBLEM
A common operational issue with genset engines is overheating due to corrosion and scaling. This arises from the use of non-standard coolant or regular water. If this issue is not properly addressed, it can be very detrimental to the company as it may cause production to halt for an extended period due to the damaged energy source.

SOLUTION
To prevent corrosion and scaling in genset engines that can cause overheating, the solution is to use a good radiator coolant. Eonchemicals offers the GreenCool 488 formula, a ready-to-use radiator coolant for cooling systems. This product contains corrosion inhibitors from the Organic Acid Technology (OAT) group, anti-scaling agents, and fouling preventers for closed-cycle cooling systems. It is specially formulated to prevent overheating, rust, and scaling.
Here is the application of GreenCool 488 on the genset of one of Eonchemical’s customers.
