Handling self-combustion or coal self-ignition must be done immediately to prevent it from spreading across the pile or stockpile. Self-combustion begins with the absorption of oxygen at low temperatures.
Generally, handling coal self-combustion involves using heavy equipment such as excavators to separate the burning coal, thereby lowering the coal’s temperature and extinguishing the fire. However, this method alone is time-consuming because burning coal can reach temperatures of 300 – 500°C or even higher, and the fuel consumption for the heavy equipment excavator will also increase significantly.
Sometimes, water is used in the field to help extinguish the fire, but this is ineffective as water evaporates quickly. If it becomes very difficult to extinguish, it is possible that the burning coal will be separated and left to burn out completely.
This issue is certainly very detrimental to the coal owners, both economically, as their “money” can burn up entirely, and in terms of pollution due to the gases produced by the burning coal.
Solution
Eonchemicals presents a special foam for extinguishing coal self-combustion. It is specially formulated using surfactants and fire retardants that quickly extinguish coal self-combustion. This foam is also very economical, capable of extinguishing coal self-combustion with only a 1-3% concentration. The materials used are environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and biodegradable.
Succes Story
Coal self-extinguishing with FireShield 108
A coal company in Kalimantan frequently experienced self-combustion in their stockpile. They only used heavy equipment excavators to extinguish it. Using excavators took a long time, requiring a lot of manpower and fuel costs. Moreover, due to the limited availability of heavy equipment in the field, the handling was inadequate.
Eonchemicals provided a solution with the application of FireShield 108. The burning coal temperature, initially reaching 548.4°C, dropped to 37.4°C within just 5 minutes after being extinguished with this product.
The extinguishing process was carried out using a pump and stick nozzle. The stick nozzle was inserted directly into the source of the fire, allowing extinguishing without opening the coal pile and without the need for heavy equipment excavators.
