Coal dust (fine coal) needs to be controlled in quantity to ensure it is not hazardous to the environment and workers. Several issues such as dust-related diseases like pneumoconiosis arise from suboptimal handling of coal dust. Coal dust is generated during the crushing process, screening, and transfer at conveyor drop points.
A common method of handling is by spraying water. In addition to using water, a more advanced approach is to add water with a chemical coal dust suppressant. However, the application is often still inadequate, resulting in persistent dust problems and spontaneous combustion at some mines.
Besides the improper application method, another frequent issue is the selection of an inappropriate type of chemical for the system or application.
Solution
CSS EON Technology (Coal Spray System)
To make the chemical application more effective, Eonchemicals has developed a device called EON CSS (Coal Spraying System). Based on its working system, the spraying system is divided into two types: (1) dry fog and (2) wet fog.
Dry fog is a spraying method that produces smaller water droplets (< 10 microns). This system can be referred to as fogging, with the primary target being to moisten the air around the coal to suppress dust. On the other hand, wet fog produces larger water droplets. Its main target is to coat the coal.
In practice, dry fog is used as a dust suppressant and is combined with a surfactant-based dust suppressant chemical. It is not recommended to combine it with a polymer-based chemical. Wet fog is used as a prevention method for spontaneous combustion (sponcomb), combined with a sponcomb inhibitor chemical to coat the coal, thus breaking direct contact with oxygen.
The following are the results of applying the CSS wet system. It has been proven to significantly reduce dust and address sponcomb issues.
