Online Health Talk – Surge in Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) Cases: A Health Threat Amid Worsening Air Pollution

News

The decline in air quality and the increase in air pollution have led to a rise in ARI cases among the community. The public is advised to adhere to health protocols such as wearing masks when going outside, avoiding sources of air pollution, and refraining from outdoor activities during high pollution levels.

Therefore, on this occasion, Eonchemicals Putra is hosting an online Health Talk featuring Dr. Efata Polii, an internal medicine specialist at Mayapada Hospital, to discuss and share insights about ARI with the internal team of Eonchemicals Putra. We have summarized several key points discussed during the recent online Health Talk session.

What is ARI?

ARI, or Acute Respiratory Infection, is a disease involving infection of the upper and lower respiratory tracts. ARI can be caused by viruses or bacteria, with symptoms including cough, runny nose, sore throat, shortness of breath, fever, and other related symptoms. ARI can affect anyone, but the risk is higher in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Impact of Air Pollution on ARI

Air pollution is a major factor triggering the rise in ARI cases in the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek). Pollutant particles in the air, such as PM2.5 (particulate matter measuring 2.5 microns or smaller), can damage the respiratory tract and cause inflammation. Air pollution also exacerbates ARI symptoms in those already infected.

The team from Eonchemicals Putra is advised to take the following preventive measures:

Be Aware of ARI Symptoms: It is important to recognize ARI symptoms and seek medical care immediately if you or a family member experiences symptoms like cough, runny nose, or shortness of breath.

Avoid Air Pollution Exposure: Try to minimize exposure to air pollution by staying indoors when air quality is poor. Wear a mask if necessary.

Maintain Hand Hygiene: Regularly wash your hands with soap and water to reduce the risk of ARI transmission.

For those already infected with ARI, here are some steps to take:

Get Adequate Rest: Allow your body time to recover by getting sufficient rest.

Stay Hydrated: Drink water and other fluids to prevent dehydration and loosen mucus in the respiratory tract.

Consult a Doctor:  If ARI symptoms worsen or persist for more than a few days, consult a doctor immediately.

ARI is a serious issue that needs to be addressed, especially amid rising air pollution in Jabodetabek. When affected by ARI, seek medical care promptly and follow the doctor’s instructions to ensure optimal recovery. With public awareness and appropriate preventive measures, we can protect ourselves from the dangers of ARI.
